Government pledges to revitalise islands’ commerce and shopping 

The Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla, highlighted in the Parliament of the Canary Islands the implementation during this year of at least 17 projects to reactivate the commercial fabric in the islands, financed with a total of 3,650 .000 euros.

Another 4.6 million euros are added to boost the hotel and leisure industry through the employer organisations representing these sectors.

Yaiza Castilla explained in the Parliamentary Commission that these 17 initiatives are part of the set of measures promoted by the trade department, already proposed by councils, town halls and business associations, to alleviate the consequences of the serious economic crisis generated at all levels by the Covid 19 pandemic.

Different initiatives to encourage consumption and revitalisation will be developed starting in October for a joint amount of 4.6 million around the hospitality, leisure and active tourism.

Regarding commerce initiatives, , a total of 17 commercial reactivation projects have already been selected in all the islands, except in El Hierro, which did not present any.

In the selection of initiatives, the department headed by Castilla has given priority to those whose main objective is to accelerate consumption in the medium and short term, mainly in traditional places of purchase, such as open shopping areas and markets, as well as promoting the digitisation of the sector in order to attract consumers who choose online channels.

Regarding the projects by islands, Tenerife, with a global item of 1,522,478 euros, concentrates a total of 7 initiatives promoted by the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (Fauca), which has two projects, the Federation of Business Development and Comercial de Canarias (Fedeco); the Isla Baja Consortium; The City Council of La Laguna; the Development Society of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Cabildo de Tenerife.

It is followed by Gran Canaria, where 1,144,993 have been allocated to the development of 5 projects promoted by the municipalities of the North, Southwest and Midlands of Gran Canaria and by the municipalities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Telde.

In Lanzarote, 258,130 euros have been allocated to the Consume Lanzarote Economic Reactivation, Digitization and Loyalty project, of the Federation of SMEs of the Island.

On the island of Fuerteventura, the Department of Commerce collaborates with the Island Council in the bond plan I buy in Fuerteventura, with an item of 198,122 euros.

With regard to La Palma, two projects launched by the FedePalma and FAEP federations for a total amount of 140.00 euros stand out, while in La Gomera the Government finances with 36,448 euros a plan to improve and promote the commercial sector, promoted by the Cabildo.
