Islands promoted as safe haven for athletes with new action plan

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands has prepared an action plan to position the archipelago as the best winter destination in Europe for those who need to develop their training.

The islands are being promoted for their climate, geography,
water temperature and specialised services for athletes. Health security is
also incorporated as a value of the destination, at this time where practically
all European countries have imposed more restrictive measures due to the
increase in new infections.

Minister Yaiza Castilla said:  “We have natural
conditions that make us a paradise for training and active sports in nature.
The promotion of this tourist segment is included in our marketing plan and the
current scenario forces us to persevere even more given that while in the rest
of Europe contagions have intensified and confinement has returned, in the
islands we can welcome those who they can’t stop training. We are open and we
are the best possible destination for all those who would otherwise put their
sports careers aside ”.

Taking advantage of the presence of a large group of sailors
who are in Lanzarote training for the Tokyo Olympic Games, scheduled for July
2021, Canary Islands Tourism is preparing various materials to disseminate
these days among the national and international media. It includes the
testimonies of some of the 200 elite athletes of 35 different nationalities who
have chosen the Islands as their training base this winter.

At the same time, a more ambitious communication campaign is
being prepared in a true commitment to the professional sports tourism segment.
The actions will be complemented with cobranding actions with major brands
relevant to sports and for elite athletes themselves.

Thus, in the first piece, testimonies of medalists such as
Sime Fantela, Olympic champion in the 2016 Rio Olympics in class 470, are
incorporated, who affirms that Lanzarote is “the paradise of sailing”.
