Sports gala honours the best athletes and teams of La Orotava
La Orotava has paid tribute to the athletes of the municipality with the celebration of the annual Sports Gala.
The event is also an act of recognition and thanks to all those who practise sports in any modality as this also implies maintaining healthy life habits.
From the local institution, an important commitment is made to grassroots sports, and clubs and athletes in general are helped, as well as investments to improve and modernise sports infrastructure and facilities.
A crowded public hall hosted an emotional Gala in its 18th edition. The event, presented by sports journalist Pedro Barreto, was chaired by Mayor Francisco Linares; the Director of Sports of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Laura Castro and the councillor for sports, Antonio Lima. Also present were other members of the municipal corporation, athletes, friends and family.
The gala pays tribute to the best athletes, clubs and teams in the municipality, and other values and trajectory are also distinguished.
In this edition the young Elvira Luis González, champion of Tenerife in javelin throwing under 16 and second classified in the island games, was chosen as the Best Sportsman. He has also been in second place in the Canarian championships of weight throwing and three times of javelin throwing, in addition to being 32nd in the National Ranking of javelin throwing sub 16 2019.
Argimiro José Pérez García is the Best Sportsman who at only 14 years is a firm promise of the Orotava-Puerto de la Cruz Volleyball club. He brings quality and technique to the teams of children and male cadet of the club, and participated in one of the successes of the Canary volleyball last season, obtaining the Spanish championship of regional teams. He is also a children’s Canarian champion and third in the regular phase of the island’s volleyball league.
The distinction of Best Sports Club went to the Orotava-Clator Athletics Club which has about 400 athletes of all ages, and thanks to many of them and their achievements they have won important awards in the insular, regional and Canary Islands.
The journalist Cipriano García received an award as Sports Spirit, and the rhythmic gymnastics coach Candelaria Pavón Lostra the Sports Development for her 18 years of dedication helping numerous gymnasts.
The mountain group Sombras del Teide obtained recognition for Human Values; the referee Carlos Díaz García is distinguished by his Sports Trajectory and Gregorio Cabrera receives, on a posthumous basis, Honorific Award.
Mayor Francisco Linares began his speech with warm words precisely for this posthumous and honorary award to Gregorio Cabrera, known to everyone as Goyo. He highlighted his work and values, and regretted not having given him this recognition before “because sometimes we do not look at those people who give everything every day because we get used to seeing it, but his work has always been valued, his dedication to sports and , especially the base sport, and that he was a great and good person ”.
He also highlighted the work and values of each of those distinguished in this gala, for their contribution in multiple ways and for devoting much of their life to sports in La Orotava. He also thanked the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife for sport and the presence of the insular director at the event.
Sr. Linares thanked the work of all athletes and those who work behind, managers and others, to make everything work, valuing the hours and effort devoted to it. Among other data, he stressed that the Villa has more than 50 clubs and more than 3,500 athletes in the base sport.
