Puerto hotels lead the way in waste management
More than 40 hotel and non- hotel establishments in Puerto de la Cruz have significantly improved the separation and management of their waste (plastic, paper, glass) over the last year with a door-to-door collection system.
These results are directly related to the project proposed more than a year ago by Ashotel, researchers from the Ashotel-CajaCanarias Tourism Chair of the University of La Laguna and the local council to apply an intelligent rate of payment for waste generation that rewards the efforts in the minimisation and separation of these by hotel entrepreneurs.
Of the total hotels currently participating in door-to-door collection, eight have gone one step further and since March 2019 they are also separating organic waste. These are the Marte, El Tope, Eden Vacation Park, We are La Paz, Príncipe San Felipe Bay, Taoro Garden, Atlantic Mirage and Tigaiga establishments.
Ashotel is urging the competent authorities to start up organic waste treatment plants so the compost can be returned to farms and parks and gardens to clearly boost a circular economy on the island and take advantage of this measure as a sustainable destination.
Enrique Talg, vice president of Ashotel, said: “The hoteliers of Puerto have taken the initiative in this type of environmental and sustainable initiatives, as they already did when they were pioneers in the creation of the Q of Quality in 1995 or the implementation of European certificates of EMAS eco-audit.”
