Horse is found in camper van in hold of ferry to Canaries
The Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard in Lanzarote has denounced a person who was transporting a small horse inside a camper van in the hold of a ship travelling between Huelva and the Canaries.
The Civil Guard was alerted by the shipping company itself after the crew discovered the breach.
Seprona officers waited for the ship to arrive at 2.30pm on August 11th at the Los Mármoles dock, in the town of Arrecife, Lanzarote.
They located the family-type vehicle that concealed a pony inside and confirmed it was not suitable for the transfer of animals and failed to comply with safety measures and sanitary hygienic conditions for animal transport.
Apparently, the animal came from Holland, making the journey to Huelva by land by vehicle and then by sea to its final destination on the island of Tenerife, prior to a stopover in Lanzarote.
“All this journey was carried out irregularly in the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle without complying with the corresponding permits for the movement of the animal, and also violated the regulations on the transport of the animal, also giving the circumstance that the animal lacked boat ticket for the transfer of animals, ”said the Civil Guard.
Long distance animal transport is a complex operation. Therefore, the person in charge was denounced for several infractions of the Animal Health Law, and to the Royal Decree on Animal Health and Protection Regulations during transport.
