Divers urged to enter La Gomera’s new underwater photography contest

La Gomera has presented the first online underwater photography contest as a new tourist reference in which the most unique underwater images of the island are rewarded.

The contest opens from August 1st and aims to collect the best snapshots of the seabed, while becoming a new reference within the tourism offer, set in the strategy of diversification of tourism products, launched by the Ministry of Tourism.
The insular initiative is proposed as a way to publicise the wealth of the sea, encouraging people to practice diving, along with photography. “We want this product to be another incentive to decide to come to La Gomera, meet it, and enjoy everything it offers,” said councillor María Isabel Méndez.
She explained that the categories of landscape, vertebrates, invertebrates, models and compact cameras have been established, so that each of the photographers can present their images within each of these sections.
As for the contest, she stressed that a presentation period will be opened during the first 20 days of the months of August, September, October and November. During the last ten days of each of these months, you can vote on the images presented on the web lagomera.travel. The most voted image will be awarded as ‘Photo of the month’, while the rest of those selected from the public and the jury will pass monthly to the final phase.
The contest establishes four awards. A first prize of 2,000 euros; a second of 1,500 euros; and a third of 1,000 euros. In addition, the best compact photography modality with 1,000 euros of prize is added. People who participate in the voting will enter a raffle for five diving courses, taught by instructors of the El Sebadal Diving Club.
Registration is free and must be done at lagome-ra.travel. Participants will be over 18 years old, but members of the organisation or sponsors cannot partici-pate.
President of the El Sebadal Diving Club, Marcos Pérez, said all images submitted should be taken in the waters of La Gomera, and its author must always be accompanied by staff from the organisation. To do, once each participant registers, they will be notified of the dates and times planned for each scheduled departure in which the photos of the contest will be taken.
