Man who came to rescue of swimmer loses own life
There was tragedy in Fuerteventura when a man tried to help a young woman in distress in the sea but though she was saved, he lost his own life.
The events occurred around 5pm in the afternoon on the beach of Tebeto, in Tinada, in the municipality of La Oliva, when the 112 control centre received an alert in which it was reported that a young woman was in trouble at sea, with the current carrying her out.
The person who raised the alarm said a man had come to the aid of the woman.
The GES helicopter rescued the man and, finding he was in cardiorespiratory arrest, evacuated him to hospital where he died.
Local Police reported that the girl in distress managed to get out of the water by herself and was in good health.
The rescue mission involved all arms of the emergency services, including Civil Protection, Maritime Rescue, the Canary Emergency Service and police.
The emergency services have not revealed details of ages or nationalities or whether the man and woman were related or together.
