New bike path to Lanzarote airport
Lanzarote’s Cabildo is inviting tenders for a project which will create a bike path connecting the promenade of Playa Honda with the airport.
This new section of the global project “Vía Ciclista Insular” has a bidding budget of 620,859 euros. The money will come from the Cabildo and European funds under a sustainable growth programme.
The bike path is aimed at encouraging airport workers and users to use different types of transport which are more environmentally friendly.
Cabildo president, Pedro San Ginés said the path would run through the interior of the airport enclosure and through a walkway connecting the terminals. He described the project as “one more step” for the bike route envisaged to unite Costa Teguise with Puerto del Carmen.
Public works councillor Saray Rodríguez said the project would provide a safer route for cyclists and pe-destrians heading for the terminals, as well as car drivers because the riders would not have to cross their path.
“The project will be developed along part of the seafront and will run parallel to the current rainwater channel and perimeter fencing east-north of the runway and take-off of the airport,” she explained.
