Man faces prison for trafficking stuffed bear!
Police in Spain were stunned when they opened the boot of a car stopped during routine patrols and found a full-sized stuffed bear inside!
The ursus americanus, a protected species, was hidden under a blanket and could only just fit in the confined space.
The unusual discovery was made in Navarra by officers who immediately called in members of the environmental protection squad.
They confirmed it was a black American bear which cannot be hunted, killed or trafficked.
A police spokesman posted on Twitter: “There are many things you can carry in your car. A protected bear, no. Not even if it’s stuffed!”
A 45-year-old man was later charged for contravening the regulations on endangered species. He could be sent to prison for up to two years or face a hefty fine.
In January, the same police discovered an endangered species of eagle offered for sale over the internet.
Police are reminding people that it is a very serious offence to break the envioronmental laws.
