Puerto puts on free workshops for women’s self defence

Puerto de la Cruz has been offering free self-protection classes as part of events to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The personal defence workshops have been organised by the local council’s department of equality.

The slogan is “La complicidad machista te hace culpble” which conveys the messa-ge that to be complicit with violence against women makes you guilty as well.

A total of 22 women formalised their registration in the self-protection and self-defense classes which have already started at the hand of specialised teachers. They are being held on Mondays during November at the Bahía Gymnasium in Puerto de la Cruz.

Councillor for equality, Diana Morá said: “These workshops highlight the high degree of sensitivity and involvement of the business community in the fight against sexist violence and its willingness to collaborate in all initiatives promoted to such ends by the council.”

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is celebrated on November 25th, the Department of Equality has launched a broad programme of activi-ties.

The Municipal Women’s Centre will continue to develop throughout the month an extensive programme of activities, including training, sports, awareness raising, citizen participation, etc. All residents are being encouraged to take part.

The workshops are free of charge.
