Veteran Miguel still reaping medals at 84!

Age is no barrier to sporting success as a veteran Los Realejos athlete has once again proved.

Miguel Hernández is about to turn 85 but continues to reap successes in athletics.

He belongs to the veteran section of the Club Atletismo Realejos CajaCanarias and was proud to represent the municipality and island in the Spanish Veteran’s Championships held in Alcobendas.

The event attracted more than 2,300 competitors from around the country and Miguel came away with two bronzes.

He was placed third in the 100 metres in 24.61 and third in the 200 metres in a time of 59.38 in the M80 categories.

Miguel is considered to be one of the most charismatic and active athletes in Los Realejos and the Canaries.

Representing Los Realejos, Emilio Marcos Lentini gained a bronze and Antonio José Martínez Serrano a silver.

The co-ordinator and leader of this veteran group, Pedro José García Estévez (M50) took part in the steeple chase but had to drop out due to injury.

Emilio took third place in the 5,000 metres, Ayoze Pérez Tejera was sixth and Antonio was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put (M35).
