Tías to get Manrique tribute at last

The only municipality on Lanzarote not to feature a work by the artist César Manrique is to have its fortunes reversed.

The Cabildo has decided that “El Róbalo” from Manrique’s collection of wind toys is to be recreated in Puerto del Carmen at a cost of 100,000 euros.

It will be placed in avenida de Las Playas, in front of the Hotel Los Jameos Playa.

Cabildo president, Pedro San Ginés said Tias was the only place on the island without anything related to the artist in terms of a beach area, sculpture or other works.

Therefore, following a request from the Mayor, Francisco Hernández this was to be rectified under the tourism infrastructure plan.

Reproduction of the sculpture has the backing of the César Manrique Foundation and meets all the requirement of the Coastal Act.

The sculpture will measure eleven metres and is on the theme of fish and the sea. It will be installed under a gazebo.

The works have now been put out to tender.
