Three arrested for stealing growth hormones
Three people have been arrested for stealing growth hormones and drugs from the pharmacy at the University Hospital of the Canaries in Santa Cruz.
It is understood two of them may have been employed at the hospital and the third was an outside accomplice.
Police launched an investigation after the hospital reported depleted stocks of certain drugs, particularly ones which are often incorrectly used by athletes to increase their muscles and strength.
The thefts had apparently been going on since last September on a regular basis, with the thieves taking boxes of the hormone.
When two properties were raided in La Laguna and La Esperanza in El Rosario, police found numerous illicit drugs, about 1,000 euros in various denominations of notes, mobile phones, computers and electronic devices.
The three people arrested are in their 20s and 30s.
Police say the hormone drugs stolen are restricted and can only be dispensed by hospitals to treat certain conditions. They are often used illegally in the sporting world, particular cycling.
