Baroque music enchants during concerts in Puerto de La Cruz

Tenerife likes to offer visitors and local peo-ple all types of music and Puerto de la Cruz is no exception.

The spotlight is currently falling on the baroque era which spans the years from 1600 to 1750 and still has many fans.

The very successful Reyes Bartlet Cultural Association is hosting the “XIII Festival de Música Antigua de Puerto de la Cruz” which began on March 14th and continues until April 11th.

The event has offered five concerts and though two have already taken place, there are still three to enjoy.

The Baroque Orchestra of Tenerife are regular contributors to the festival and they will perform on Sunday, March 30th in the Anglican Church at 8.30pm with works by Biber, Farina and Telemann.

The performers are Juan Carlos Gómez, Laura Díaz, Alixandro Cabrera and Giovanni Déniz on violin; Esther Alfonso and Melchor García on viola; Diego Pérez on cello; Juan Carlos Baeza who plays bass and Raquel García on keyboard.

Do take the opportunity to see and listen to this new independent group which has been formed because of a common interest in baroque and renaissance music.

On the following Tuesday, the location changes to the Teatro Timanfaya with a tribute to creative women, also at 8.30pm.

Isabel Álvarez (soprano) and Carlos Oramas on guitar and the unusual instrument, the tiorba will be looking at the contribution creative women have made over the last five centuries. This is to recognise the tremendous mark they have left on society.

They will perform works by various women composers, including the likes of Anna Bolena (1501-1536), Maddalena Casulana; (1544-1590) and Claudia Sessa (1570-1620).

The culmination of the festival will be on Saturday, April 11th at the church of Peña de Francia with the Humboldt Ensemble. This talented group consists of Satomi Morimoto, soprano; Martina Warecka, baroque violin; Raquel Garcia on organ and Mark Peters, on baroque cello. They will play works by Cima, Buxtehude, Gabrieli, Händel, Bach and Telemann.  This concert is also at 8.30pm.
