A great taste of home with A. C. Woodenspoons at the Premier Bar

Fantastic offers to tempt you all.

It’s one of those strange quirks of going on holi- day or living in a foreign country that despite all the fantastic cuisine on offer, you still yearn for the things you love back home.

One of these is a good British pub/restaurant with great food and lots of offers. A certain well-known chain immediately springs to mind.

Every time we go home to the UK, we always visit Wetherspoons where the menu is full of fantastic deals, many with drinks included and we constantly remark: “Why doesn’t Tenerife do more of this?”

The answer is, it does, courtesy of A. C. Wooden-spoons which you will find in the Premier Bar, next to the Fairways Club at Amarilla Golf. This pub/restaurant is unconnected with the chain but it is just as good!

We have eaten here several times, including on a Sunday when the roast dinner we all love comes with a glass of wine included. In fact, we have to say this is probably one of the best places for intelligent marketing in the south of Tenerife and the owners deserve every bit of their success over the years.

The extensive menu is full of good ideas. Particularly popular is the “Two for ten euros” deal on selected dishes which runs Monday to Friday from 5pm to 10pm. To take advantage, all you have to do is to pop in or phone by 4pm on the day you want to visit and make your table booking. Then you can choose from a number of dishes, such as mushroom carbonara with garlic bread or liver, bacon, onion, mash and peas, and pay just ten euros for two meals.

You will also find a free drink offer with a lot of the choices. This includes the regular themed nights ie Canarian Club on a Monday, Curry Club on a Wednesday and Fish Club on Friday. These are all from 5pm to 10pm.

Saturday evening is Steak Club and when you buy two steaks, you get one free bottle of house wine. The steak refers to a charcoal grilled premier steak, fillet steak, salmon or gammon, all served with potatoes, salad or vegetables.

We popped in recently to see co-owner Carole and to admire the newly-completed refurbishment of the interior which has been nicely done in soft beiges and browns. There are formal places to eat or comfy seating areas where you can just sit back and relax.

This is a spacious restaurant with a big bar but you can sit outside on a small patio area if you wish.

The ethos of A. C. Wooden-spoons is to provide great food at excellent prices and the standard of the food is excellent, with plentiful portions. As Carole says, the kitchen may only be small but people are very delighted with what comes out of it!

One thing we really love is the range of organic home-made chutneys and relishes (such as chilli relish, beetroot and orange chutney) which can spice up your dishes.

Food is served here from 9am right through to 10pm and there is absolutely everything you could want, from breakfasts onwards.

There are starters and sharers (do try the nachos with home-made salsa and melted cheese or the flaming garlic prawns with crusty bread), salads and pastas, various stacked burgers or the “Premier classics” for just 7.95 euros. These include the chef’s speciality of steak and guinness pie (simply mouth-watering!), scampi, lasagne and vegetarian sizzler with a selection of peppers, leeks, mushrooms and fresh tomatoes with tortilla wraps and sweet chilli sauce.

There is also an extensive barbecue range which also includes a free drink.  Main dishes to tempt you range from fillet steak for 14.95 euros, Jumbo gammon and egg (11.95 euros), Hickory chicken with bacon, BBQ sauce and melted cheese (9.95 euros), a Premier mixed grill for 17.95 euros (for big appetites!) or half rack of ribs with BBQ sauce (9.95 euros).

This is family-oriented pub/restaurant so children under the age of 12 have their own two course menu for just four euros.

Though you are guaranteed the taste of home when you visit, you still get the added advantage of the holiday atmosphere with live entertainment every night with some great acts. Of course, the British love it but so do all nationalities and customers return time and time again, sometimes every night for a week (and you would never run out of choices!).

Here is just one comment on TripAdvisor to demonstrate the point:  “What a great, great place. The entertainment in Woodenspoons is great, the landlady and landlord and staff are so nice and helpful. We will be back!”

So, do find time to visit, regardless of whether you are on holiday or live here. You will find the Fairways Resort just opposite the supermarket in Amarilla Golf and it’s a five minute walk from Hotel Aguamarina and the marina (which makes for a lovely little stroll to work off any calories afterwards!).

To book for the two for ten euro deal, do ring 922 738 607 and please don’t hesitate to contact them if you need help with a special occasion, celebration or party.
