Try some new sensations this summer
Summer has well and truly arrived and what better a time to get out and about, find a nice terrace, enjoy the sunshine and treat yourself to some new tastes?
Tenerife is fast becoming a gastronomic paradise and many special events are held throughout the year but in particular the summer to turn the spotlight on the culinary expertise you will find here.
Taste the different cheeses, try the mojo sauces, perhaps even rabbit for the first time, savour the island’s lovely honey or some unusual combinations.
A good starting point is the municipality of Granadilla which is currently celebrating its festival known as Sansofe.
As part of this, “Sen-saciones Sabores de Verano” will be held in the plaza of El Médano on August 1st.
In the morning, you can have a look round the Farmers’ Market which sells all sorts of produce and bakery items. They will be joined by food artisans , dedicated to the sale of food products to promote quality and excellence.
In the afternoon, proprietors of food businesses and wine cellars will be joining forces belonging to the five wine demoninations of Tenerife. These include Valle de La Orotava, Tacoronte-Acentejo and Valle de Guimar and reflect the different grapes grown on the island and the techniques used to turn them into white, red and rosé wine.
If you are particularly interested in wines, you might like to visit La Baranda wine museum or “Casa del Vino” which is in El Sauzal in the north of Tenerife. Here you can enjoy tastings and there is also a restaurant and a honey museum. See www.tenerife.es/casa-vino
If you go up to Adeje old town on the second Saturday of every month and also during Auust, you will find Degusta.Me (Try Me) in the Plaza de España where you can enjoy tastings, including cheese, honey and gofio.
This area, incidentally, is famed for its very affordable and delicious garlic chicken, mojo sauces and ali oli with Canary potatoes and local wine. Something you must try if here on holiday and don’t forget to pop in to the Adeje Agricultural Market held on a Saturday and Sunday.
Another great way to taste the local food is to follow a tapas trail and there are lots of them this summer.
In our Lookout section, you will find details of a comprehensive gastronomic event in Los Realejos where the “papa bonita”, the gorgeous potatoes served here, takes centre-stage. The programme includes a tapas route where you can enjoy a dish and a glass of wine for just three euros.
Mahou San Miguel is also organising for the first time a “ruta de la tapa” which takes in restaurants in La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz. Customers can enjoy a Mahou Cinco Estrellas and a tapas dish for just 2.50 euros. The promotion comes to an end on July 24th so you just have time to catch it, though restaurants in these areas are of course worth visiting at any time!
In Santa Cruz from August 22nd to August 24th, top chefs will be joining forces with leading figures in the culinary world to present the very first international gastronomy conference under the banner of Cielo Mar & Tierra.
This will include talks, presentations, tastings, workshops and competitions, centred on the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín. There will be an open zone for the public and around 3,000 delegates are expected to this unique event for the Canary Islands. You can discover more on www.cielomarytierra.es
The organisation Saborea Tenerife has also teamed up with various municipalities across the island this year to present gastronomic events with different themes. In Vilaflor during August, there will be events to celebrate the papa blanca whilst honey, cheese and gofio will be the stars in Adeje during September. Events will also visit Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, Acentejo, Arico, Arafo and Guimar. Keep up to date on Saborea’s Facebook site and also on www.webtenerife.co.uk
Incidentally, there is also a festival taking place at the Museum of Nature and Man in Santa Cruz about all things Moroccan and events include themed dishes on Thursdays and Fridays during July and August at the gastro bar.
Hopefully, this taster of summer events will inspire you to get out and about and enjoy some different sensations as well as introducing you to different areas of Tenerife.
