Olympics begin in Los Realejos
You’ve seen the Olympics on television, now see them in Los Realejos.
The great sporting event is the theme of this year’s Carnival which began on February 23rd with “protocol” ie the reading of the manifesto and pro-gramme and then the “fun” with the presentation of candidates for the Carnival Queens, music and entertainment.
The election of the adult gala queen takes place at 8.30pm on February 28th with performances by two of the carnival groups whilst the children’s carnival queen will be selected at 6.30pm on March 1st in the plaza San Agustin.
Sunday, March 2nd will see the third edition of the “Carnaval de Dia de Los Realejos” which starts at noon with the children’s parade leaving La Carrera to San Agustin. Upon arrival, there will be a host of fun and activities such as workshops, inflatables, the “Third Age” fiesta, make-up workshops, fancy dress competitions for both adults and children, orchestras and more. At 7pm, also in the plaza, carnival musical groups will compete in the annual competition.
Monday, March 3rd is the main Carnival day, known as the “Coso”, leaving the centre of Tigaiga at 5pm in the direction of the plaza de San Agustin where the fun continues.
Carnival Tuesday will feature the annual car rally of old vehicles at 1pm in calle San Agustin.
On March 5th, it is time to burn poor old Señor Rascayú, with the procession leaving La Carrera to San Agustín at 8pm. What is known as the Young Festival then continues in the plaza. Finally, on March 6th, there are various activities from 7pm in El Jardin, culmi-nating in the “cremation” of El Jardinero.
