Tenerife Sur Lions hold their President´s Night gala dinner
On Saturday the 22nd June Tenerife Sur Lions Club held its 28th Presidents Night Gala Dinner.
In a time to enjoy meeting old and new friends in a convivial atmosphere, Lions Club members and their guests including the British Vice Consul Helen Keating and her husband, Antonio, gathered on the terrace of the prestigious Hotel Paradise Park for pre-dinner drinks and canapés prior to the more formal duties and speeches of the evening.
Ken Sadler, presiding Master of Ceremonies introduced the continuing Lion’s President Norman Goodall MBE to present the club’s annual awards.
Making a number of “President’s Appreciation” awards to club members and others who had assisted in various ways to keep the club moving forward from strength to strength, Norman cited one member, David Thorley, of whom he said “he has been so very effective in his duty as club secretary this year and in his support to me in particular” thanking him on behalf of all and the members.
The “Lion of the Year” award went to Mike Marshall for his work with the club’s publicity and website.
With the presentations of over, the assembled company moved into the dining area to “Welcome In” the President, his Lady, Edna Goodall and Guest of Honour, Helen Keating British Vice Consul to the Canary Islands and husband Antonio before the commencement of the Gala Dinner service.
Following the Grace given by the President, the British Vice Consul was called upon to give the Loyal Toasts to His Majesty King Carlos of Spain and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The formalities continued with the Presidential address in which Norman drew attention to the fact that Tenerife Sur Lions Club had, over the last 28 years, devoted its members´ time and energy to be wherever their help was needed.
He continued to say “We have majored on our “Dream Holidays” for the under privileged and disadvantaged children and will continue to do so. However our charitable work has been called on in so many ways and we are working closely with the three local town hall Social Services departments who refer people in need to us for assistance in improving their daily lives.
When hard times arrive, it is often the younger members of the community that forego their aspirations and dreams. With this in mind we are currently looking at ways of creating a Tenerife Sur Lions Scholarship to enable a particularly bright student to undertake a university degree course, but who without financial support could not realise their potential and dream.
Having recently funded a small group of girl athletes from a Los Cristianos school to take part in the Spanish National Championship, we realize the need to encourage children to keep fit and train, cut out alcohol and smoking and adopt a healthy lifestyle. To that end we are supporting several local sports initiatives.”
He concluded by saying “I am committing our club to a furtherance of the ideals we have generated in recent years, remembering the Lion’s Motto “We Serve”
The meal service followed with a Gala Dinner, a beautifully presented five course meal reflecting the hotel’s dining excellence which was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone, it being further enhanced by an excellent service of good wines and concluded with coffee and liqueurs.
Complementing the evening there was music, dancing and entertainment with three great cabaret acts which soon had everyone dancing the night away.
With carriages at midnight another fabulous Tenerife Sur Lions President’s Night drew to a close.
A, big thanks of appreciation must go to all who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the evening the obvious success it was. In particular to Beryl Sadler who designed and arranged the table decorations, seating plan and memento brochure, not forgetting the staff and management of the Paradise Park hotel with a special thanks to all the waiters and kitchen staff for whom nothing was too much trouble.
