Bye bye blackbird

Four baby blackbirds found themselves a long way from home after their nest travelled 300 miles on the back of a trailer being towed by a car.

The driver was unaware the birds’ nest housing the tiny nestlings was on the trailer when she started her journey in Plymouth. Upon arriving at Stamford in Lincolnshire, she was dismayed to discover they had travelled the whole distance with her and were now a long way away from their mum.

The baby birds, who weighed between just 40g and 50g each, were taken to RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre in Norfolk to be cared for until they are old enough to fend for themselves.

Manager Alison Charles said: “They are really tiddly little things – there’s no way they would have survived on their own. Without their mum to feed them and care for them these tiny blackbirds need us to step in and bring them up instead.

“It was just an unfortunate accident that they were taken so far away from their mum – the driver simply did not know they were there and then it was too late and too far to return them.”

The tiny birds need to be fed little and often and so are being fed every 20 minutes with a syringe.
