A “gem” with amazing views and cuisine, “El Calderito de la Abuela”

A huge part of the wining and dining experience in Tenerife is to try somewhere and something different. Many people have already discovered the delights of the restaurant “El Calderito de la Abuela” in Santa Ursula and their recommendations have led to a prestigious award.

Though from the outside, you might easily pass by it, the inside is full of charm and character and there is an incredible view of La Orotava valley below. “A gem” is how it is described.

Thanks to continous praise on TripAdvisor, this family-owned restaurant has received a “Certificate of Excellence” which is only granted to about ten per cent of establishments featured.

The award recognises outstanding hospitality and is only given if a restaurant scores at least four points out of five given by followers of TripAdvisor.  It must also have been featured on the site for a minimum of 12 months and have received a certain number of recommendations. Out of all the restaurants in Santa Ursula featured on the site, it holds the number one position.

“El Calderito de la Abuela” fulfilled all the criteria and was delighted to receive the certificate from TripAdvisor as testament to all the hard work carried out, the attention to detail and the excellent food and wine served.

Co-proprietor Mario Xavier Torres Núñez said:

“We strive to give our customers a memorable experience and this award attests to this.”

“El Calderito de la Abuela” is based on strong family traditions stretching back 80 years, as well as culinary treasures. The restaurant’s charm is unique and homely and it is proud to have a history of almost four generations of restaurateurs. From Doña Ceferina Martín Acosta who founded the establishment through to the present owners of Mario Xavier Torres and Fabián Torres, testament is paid to renowned chef, Mario Torres as they continue to delight guests and visitors.

The restaurant combines traditional Canary cuisine with modern creativity, producing dishes which are great in flavour. You can savour various textures and flavours with produce and wine from the region. There is a full menu, as well as daily specials.

It goes without saying that only fresh ingredients are used, most of the vegetables are grown in the family’s private finca, fresh vegetables without any pesticides.

The award winning Terrajal wine is also produced from grapes grown on their land, and is a very fitting accompaniment to any meal.

At an average price of 18 euros per head and with the spectacular views this restaurant has to offer we would strongly recommend a visit.

We would also sugest that you book a window table in advance as they are very popular.

You will find El Calderito by coming off the TF5 motorway at Cuesta de la Villa, Exit 32, then take a right turn on to the secondary road, Carretera Provincial, you will find them about 300 metres along on the right.
