Anaga bids for Biosphere status
The Anaga Rural Park is bidding for official status as a Biosphere Reserve.
The nomination has been submitted by Santa Cruz city council and has the support of La Laguna and Tegueste.
A decision will be made in due course by Unesco which is very keen that local people play an active part in research and sustainable development.
Santa Cruz environment councillor, Yuri Mas said Anaga Rural Park was a natural environment of great diversity and a high degree of conservation. Tribute was paid to all those who had so far been involved in the bid which would be a first for Tenerife if granted and would follow in the footsteps of other islands. Local people, said the councillor, were the real stars of the care and conservation of the area.
Designation as a Biosphere Reserve would be of enormous importance for the whole of the archipelago and would give this unique area the recognition it deserves.
