The Canary Government says it will not give up the fight to have airport bonuses restored.
President, Paulino Rivero has been asked by Spain’s Ministry of Development to submit a report proving the direct link between rates and competitiveness.
When the bonuses were in place in 2011 and 2010, the Canaries attracted a record number of visitors but once the rebates were scrapped, numbers plunged by 450,000 tourists. Latest data shows this drop is continuing. Sr. Rivero said he “would not tire” of repeating that air connectivity between the islands and mainland Europe was essential to strengthen tourism.
