“Miracle” not enough for health

The Canary Government has admitted it needs “more than a miracle” to solve the urgent problem of rising waiting lists in the health service. President Paulino Rivero has issued a distress call to the Ministry of Health which in turn says it needs more money. As at December 31st last year, nearly 30,000 patients were queuing for surgery, 9.16% more than in June 2012. Opposition politicians claim that even these figures have been “massaged”. The Canary Government says it cannot solve the problem itself. Meantime, the Ministry of Health has revealed Spain’s medical debt has now reached the 2,000 million euro mark and admits that cuts in the budget is seriously affecting regional funding for the archipelago.
