Caution over scrap metal dealers
Traders in and around Puerto de la Cruz have been warned to be on the lookout for scrap metal dealers following a spate of thefts in the town.
On the night of February 14th, what is believed to have been a gang of thieves went out and about removing manhole covers.
Most were taken from the pedestrian area of Jardines del Taoro so a large vehicle must have been used.
The theft was discovered just after 7pm by workers from the municipal gardens. The gang used special instruments to get the covers off, some of which were 75 centimetres by 20 centimetres.
This type of theft is happening all over the island as the metal is sold for scrap, leaving local authorities or the Cabildo to pick up the expensive bill for replacements.
It also causes a hazard for motorists and pedestrians and in the case of Puerto, police had to put cones out to alert people to the openholes.
