A new-look for Puerto’s San Telmo

Major improvements are expected to be carried out to Paseo de San Telmo in Puerto de la Cruz, including opening it out to the sea.

The work should start this year following a collaboration between Tenerife Cabildo, Puerto council and the Canary Government.

Cabildo vicepresident and tourism councillor, Carlos Alonso said the project is one of their priorities because of the scenic value of the area, its restaurant appeal and the number of shops. It was felt that regeneration of the zone would help businesses and encourage new ones.

This view was reflected by economic councillor, Efrain Medina and the Mayor, Marcos Brito who said it would be a great boost for the commercial sector of San Telmo. A new modern and attractive look would also help to create more jobs in the longterm.

The area involved will be from the Plaza Reyes Católicos to calle Santo Domingo, along the access to the oean and Sargento Cáceres to calle La Hoya.

The work has a budget of 1.6 million euros, financed by the Canary Government, Cabildo and Puerto council and will take ten months to complete.

Opening the zone up to the sea will include removing any architectural barriers, land-scaping, renewing street furniture and signs. A survey is also taking place to identify any negative features of private buildings in San Telmo and to improve such elements as balconies and facades. All 35 commercial buildings will also be reviewed.
