Arona helps 36 clubs
Arona has had to cut its budget for sport grants by 28% but has pledged to continue to help grassroot clubs as much as possible.
Sports councillor Mónica Sierra said 381,601 euros was being allocated to 36 clubs in the municipality. They cover 20 different sports, including athletics, basketball, motorsport, handball, basketball, boxing, pigeons, football, judo, tennis, diving, sailing, volleyball and Canary wrestling.
Mónica Sierra said the amount of grants overall had to be cut because of the tough economic climate but the council was committed to helping clubs in Arona. The money will also help develop football at youth and senior levels, subsidise elite athletes and grants for “lucha” Canary wrestling.
