Will North and South airports become one?
Tenerife Cabildo is fighting to get the north airport included in the Trans-European Transport Network.
The European Parliament delighted the island last month by announcing that Tenerife would almost certainly be included in the prestigious network which will allow the receipt of valuable grants.
The recommendation was made by the Transport Commi-ttee and still needs to be ratified by the full Parliament within the next few months but that is expected to go through.
However, Los Rodeos airport is not considered part of the package which the Cabildo wants to put right. It believes the north airport should be included in the network just like the south airport and the ports.
In the next few months before the European Parliament makes its final decision, the Cabildo’s economic chief Carlos Alonso will travel to Brussels for talks. He said the best way forward was probably to make the north and south airports one entity ie. one airport but with two terminals but this would depend on the views of the airport authority, AENA.
