Huge parts of La Gomera are so precious that more nature guards have been appointed. The Cabildo has recruited four more environmental agents to safeguard the natural wealth of the island. About one third of La Gomera or 12,450 hectares is deemed of special interest, including the National Park of Garajonay, where flaura and fauna needs protection.

On-line Madrid based learning language website www.Busuu.com has taken the unprecedented step of adding the ancient and endangered language of Silbo, a language native only to Gomera in the Canary Islands, to its list of learning campaigns to keep the language alive.
