Summer has finally arrived and there are lots of reasons, and lots of ways, to celebrate here on Tenerife.
Our spotlight on Callao Salvaje in our last edition (403) created a lot of interest so we thought we would bring you more information about the town and an update about our advertisers.
One question people ask is whether Callao Salvaje is a town or a village. That´s a difficult one as it´s probably somewhere between the two!
As we said last time, however, it has very much a community feel and this comes over loud and clear when you visit.
There are plenty of shops and restaurants and a number of service businesses too such as rent a car, dentist, doctors, estate agents etc. It makes Callao a great place to live and you will find plenty of places to rent or buy should you decide to make your holiday a permanent one or want to relocate to somewhere affordable and by the sea. There is a mix of properties in Callao, from the smaller apartments to some super villas. Callao is on a downward sloping hill but the good news is that you can choose to live on the flat should you wish which is even more accessible to the sea front with its promenade, marine stroll and small shingle beach.
It´s said that Callao Salvaje has one of the best micro-climates in the south of Tenerife and it does always seem to be mild and sunny every time we visit.
Callao also has a surprisingly good range of leisure facilities and clubs and in recent years has put on a number of fiestas and celebrations to make it seem more like a village.
The local dance school, Vamos a Bailar or Let´s Dance always plays a major role and owner Amanda is always thinking up new innovations.
At the moment, the school, based in the Pearly Grey building by the sea-front, is running a summer school to keep children, or all ages come to that, occupied during the long school summer break. The summer school started on July 5 but continues weekly throughout July and August. There are various classes and you can choose to do all of them or select the ones you prefer.
The programme also includes a new junior cheerleading class for five to ten year olds. Cheerleading is becoming increasingly popular, not just as a leisure activity but to keep fit too, and the school has cheerleading teams which perform at local functions.
The dance school will be hosting a visit from the BCA in August to hold workshops in cheerleading and stunts for all ages. Check out their website www.vamosabailarletsdance.com for further information, ring 646 067 471 or email

With the beautiful summer weather, you will want to sit outside but also want somewhere where you can get some shade if necessary.
Can we recommend Buzzin Bar to you? If you park on the main road before you get to the front, look for the Topaz, Sol del Sur car park on your right and you will find Chris and Lynette who run this family concern, serving great food such as crunchy salads and huge omelettes and English breakfasts.
Buzzin has a patio full of flowers, trees and plants and little separate tables, in or out of the sun.
The bar opens at 9am each day and serves food until 6pm after which it remains open as a place suitable for all the family.
If you have summer cocktails on your mind, then make a date at Arnie’s bar which opened last September and is run by Matt and Karen. This bar is under the archway in the Esmeralda square on the left of the main road and features the most fantastic interior décor of mint greens and browns.
Arnie’s is very much a chill out bar where the drinks are cheap and the company excellent. Do ask for directions as it is well worth discovering, especially for those cocktails!
Don´t forget that your dog needs to keep cool in the summer as well so perhaps it´s time for a hair cut and some expert grooming.
La Boutique de Milou on the main street is run by Fabienne from Belgium who speaks five languages which is very helpful when you want help with something special. It´s a pet shop as well, selling everything you could want for your pet and more. You can also book up to have your dog groomed and Fabienne can make arrangements for your dog to be looked after during holidays as she has a link with Scooby Doo kennels.
For your own personal new look for the summer, go to Jazzy Dry Spa at Pearly Grey opposite the big car park.
Hairdresser Kim, beautician Anne and sports therapist and personal trainer Judith have a wealth of experience between them. All three team members trained in the UK and keep their qualifications and knowledge up to date with regular courses
The first year has been a busy one for the girls with renovations and new products and equipment being introduced to bring the clients the very best of what is available across the range of services
New treatments include non invasive liposculpture, vibration plate training, microdermabrasion and electro acupressure, all complemented by the existing range of beauty, nails, hair, massage, injury rehabilitation, health and nutrition services available.
The salon is a friendly and comfortable place to come for treatments and to relax with a huge range of services all under one roof.
Just a few doors away is the Jasmine Lounge, a restaurant created and run by John and Michelle, with the help of Monica, and the talents of German chef Ancor. The restaurant has a full international menu but one great offer is to share one of three different platters, full to the brim with the most gorgeous food, and get a complimentary bottle of house wine too. These platters are absolutely perfect for the summer when you want something relatively light, colourful and appetising.
And talking about tempting your taste buds, do take a walk to the French Bakery at Sueño Azul. They have cakes and of teh highest standard.
You can get here on foot up the stairs past the Pearly Grey building (it´s only a two minute walk) or as you come into Callao, take the turning right at the Sueño Azul arch and follow the directions. The bakery opens at 7am each morning for early birds and closes at 3pm. Please note, it is closed on a Tuesday.
Everything here is home-made and top quality and the glazed tarts would take anyone´s fancy, especially those topped with summer fruits such as luscious strawberries. You can´t sit down and eat here but you can have a coffee or tea if you can´t wait to eat your purchases. There´s nothing quite like fresh-baked bread or taking a box of cakes home with you or to your hotel balcony and enjoying afternoon tea.
Once again, we do hope you will be inspired to visit Callao Salvaje and enjoy discovering what it has to offer.
