Active steps taken to prevent and extinguish forest fires PDF Print E-mail

With the increase of visitors to the mountains during the summer, coupled with high temperatures, the Santa Cruz Cabildo has issued mandatory measures to prevent and control fires.

The following activities have been prohibited until November 21, 2010.
A) Open fires of all types in open spaces, in particular:
1 .- The burning of stubble, permanent pasture and yard trimmings that do not constitute agricultural waste; all authorizations previously granted for this purpose have been suspended.
2 .- Open fires in the rest areas of the road network.
3 .- Open fires in the open recreational areas, except for those sites in the specifically designated Parque de las Mesas on the Campitos Road, which may be prohibited as and when danger of fire makes it necessary.
4 .- The elimination of waste by open burning not included in section 1, except in the case of burning organic waste, in which case it will be under the provisions of Section II, point B) of this Proclamation.
B) Motor vehicle traffic on forest roads, except in the case of easements, management and enforcement work in agroforestry and extinction by the competent public authorities, in accordance with Law 433/2003 of 21 November, Forestry, amended by Law 10/2006 of April 28 and Law 42/2007 of 13 December and Decree 124/1995 of 11 May, establishing the General Scheme Uses of the tracks in the Canary Islands Protected Natural Areas.
C) The use of machinery and equipment in the mountains and in areas located within a strip of 400 meters around those areas designated, whose operation generates blast, sparks or electric shock, unless authorized or which are necessary for fire suppression.
D) The use of fireworks, except as provided in paragraph II, section C) of this manifesto.
E) Smoking, throwing or leaving burning objects or any kind of material likely to cause a fire.
F) In accordance with other provisions in force, the abandonment of any solid waste, including vehicles, in the mountains and natural spaces is prohibited.
II .- Safety and security measures: in order to ensure the safety of persons, goods and assets, the following activities will be limited:
A) Walking
For people who want to go hiking in the mountains, there is a focal point and information located in the Centro de Coordinación del Personal de Agentes Forestales del Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Casas de la Cumbre, nº 14, Parque Rural de Anaga (Tfno.: 922 690 377, Fax: 922 690 378).
This center will be in continuous communication with the local Santa Cruz de Tenerife Police, Protección Civil of that municipality, with the Consorcio de Prevención, Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento de la Isla de Tenerife, and with CECOES (Tfno.:112).
B) Use of fire
The Área de Medio Ambiente y Paisaje de Cabildo Insular de Tenerife may authorize the burning of agricultural waste in the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife provided it takes place in a location more than 200 meters from the forest.
C) Use of pyrotechnics
The Área de Medio Ambiente y Paisaje de Cabildo Insular de Tenerife has informed the Director General de Protección Civil regarding the use of fireworks in the celebration of festivals in the rural areas of the municipality; prior authorisation for their use obtained from the town hall of Santa Cruz is mandatory.
Forestry personell from the City Council's Forestry Unit will enforce these standards and carry out a timely investigation and inspection report in case of breach, resulting in the processing of the relevant disciplinary proceedings; imposing sanctions established by Legislative Decree 1 / 2000 of 8 May, which approves the revised text of the Laws of Land Management of Canaries and Canary Island Natural Areas.
