Arvid was one of the central characters in Puertos Scandinavian Club. It is hard to grasp that he died in January, aged 79, for he meant so much to us all. He joined 10 years ago, to tell stories, sing to the sound of his own guitar, and make friends - so many friends. Elegantly, he managed to bridge the often underestimated cultural differences in a club with four Nordic nationalities.

He was a collector of thoughts, experiences, books, continuting towards his rich knowledge. To this he added wonderfully funny stories, and was always ready to burst into song. He had been an agronomist, a seaman, a foreign trade attaché, an expert in Middle East carpets, director of a recording company, enough for several lives. His philosophy was carpe diem, to seize every moment in Life. We knew he suffered from several mortal ailments, including his first stroke, but none of us could imagine his languishing in hospital. True to his character he simply did not awaken on that morning in January. His itinerary for the day was, as always, full.

Arvid painted as a hobby, one of many. He used to say he would let the brush do the creative work, and he was a sceptical observer and critic of his own work. As an artist, he founded and inspired a group of amateur painters in the Club. More than a dozen of these met regularly every Saturday morning in the Garden of the clubhouse in the Calle Belgica. The art group will carry on and flourish, but how we will all miss Arvic. He was an exceptionally warm human being, spreading good waves around him. We miss him already.                               Helga B ökenes
