BRITAIN’S talented young singing star Adele got a record six gongs at The Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, but the night was marred by the death before the ceremony of singer Whitney Houston.
Adele, 23, gave her first live performance since surgery on her vocal chords before Christmas. The girl from Tottenham, North London, won all six categories for which she was nominated, equalling Beyonce for most Grammy awards in a night by a female.
Paul Epworth co-wrote Adele’s song Rolling in the Deep and he took the Grammy for producer of the year.
Whitney Houston, 48, was found dead in a bath at the Beverley Hilton 24 hours before the ceremony, which opened with a prayer and standing ovation for the singer.

IT WAS off to the small country church at Sandringham as usual on Sunday for the Queen, even though the snow made it tricky underfoot.
The service marked the eve of the anniversary of the death of her father, George VI, and Her Majesty has now served as Britain’s monarch for 60 years.
In a special message the Queen has thanked the nation for the “wonderful support and encouragement” she and the Duke Edinburgh have received over the past six decades. And Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes. The Queen had united the country and Commonwealth with her “experience, dignity and quiet authority,” he said.

WHEN smiling faces greet cruise ships passengers in St Kitts in the sunny Caribbean it is because they are pleased to see them and most importantly they have money to spend, and that is welcome in these times of global financial uncertainty.
The visitors may not spend as much as they once did and there might not be quite so many of them, but cruise ship passengers make a vital contribution to the economy throughout the Caribbean.
This income stream is all the more important because traditional holiday activity has taken a battering. The British Government is taxing airline passengers heavily and effectively suppressing the transatlantic holiday market. In America there are signs that the economy is beginning to recover, but people are not yet spending as they were.
While the cruise ship market has been weakened and duty free outlets at ports have suffered as the result of the recession, a reasonable amount of activity remains.

It goes back to the French revolution of 1789. At the Revolutionary Convention the most radical of the insurgents decided to seat themselves on the left side. “Why not on the other side, the right side, the place of rectitude, where law and the higher right resided, when man’s best hand could be raised in righteous honour?” wrote Melvin Lasky in what was then the UK´s most influential intellectual monthly, Encounter. “Anyway they went left, and man’s political passions have never been the same.”

The cessation of flights by Spanair which intends to file for bankruptcy has been described as “very bad news” for the Canary Islands.
Tourism chiefs hope other airlines will come forward to fill the significant gap left by the shock announcement.
Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism José Manuel Soria said it was a great disappointment as Spanair had helped to improve the archipelago’s connection with Spain and the rest of the world over the years. It also brought into question the role of government in private enterprise.
Prime Minister Paulino Rivero said if other companies did not step in, the Canary Islands would be “even more isolated”.
