Tenerife has pledged its firm commitment to marine protection

A new network of “Marine Protected Areas” is being set up by the Tenerife Cabildo which has already met with all interested parties in order to formulate policies.
The campaign follows recent amendments to legislation about various protected species which has led to some complaints from conservationists, particuarly regarding plans for a new port at Granadilla.
However, the Cabildo says it will do all within its powers to protect marine life and to consider the interests of fishermen, tourists and water sport enthusiasts.
Councillor for agriculture, fisheries and livestock José Joaquin Bethencourt told the first meeting that it was proposed to set up two marine reserves of fishing interest in Teno and Anaga. He also put forward a proposal for upgrading other areas of Tenerife's ocean under the framework of the co-operation agreement for the joint agreement to limit the population of sea urchins.
