Why we should all respect nature! PDF Print E-mail

Backing for Brian: This picture shows an ancient sabina tree and a reckless tourist on El Hierro which angered Queen guitarist Brian May so much before Christmas (Photo from www.brianmay.com)
It was posted to his website by a Canary Island resident who told him about an increasingly worrying trend across Spain where visitors help themselves to nature souvenirs.
As you can see, the sabina tree on El Hierro is not immune. Did this tourist realise what he was doing ie. causing yet more harm to a tree which has become such a symbol of the island? Probably not but because the picture is so vivid and quite shocking to those who love nature, it does make you think twice about your own behaviour towards our environment and it’s absolutely certain that each and everyone of us can play a part.

Bird’s postcard from Canada PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 21 January 2012 15:43
A seabird rescued in Tenerife 16 years ago has been found 4,662 kilometres and 5,024 day later in Canada!
The incredible journey has thrilled conservationists who treated the Paiño de Leach in La Laguna in 1995 when it was found suffering from exhaustion. It was released back in to the wild in the October with an identification ring fitted.
A Canadian biologist doing research in the Nova Scotia area saw it came from Tenerife and relayed the information about its safe arrival all these years later.
This is the first time a Leach has been detected so far away but reflects the magnificent conservation work being carried out on Tenerife with birds and other species such as sea turtles and reptiles.

Scientists have made an urgent plea for the continued multi-million euro financing of the Great Canary Telescope on La Palma.
They are worried that despite the spectacular discoveries it has made over the last two years, funds to secure its future are in doubt.
It costs at least four million euros to run each year but finance is also needed to upgrade some of the equipment.
The CGT has been involved in some stunning finds, including more black holes and  galaxies thought to stretch back to the very creation of the universe.

Tegueste has introduced a novel way of encouraging organic gardening.
The local council has set up a site on Facebook which will enable some 300 residents to keep in touch and even to share compost. It is hoped the scheme will also promote self-sufficiency and boost the consumption of fresh produce grown locally.
The Facebook site goes under the name of Red Compostaje de Tegueste and links together a series of urban gardens. The owners have already taken part in Tenerife Cabildo’s home composting scheme which showed householders how to make their own compost from garden and domestic waste.

Fossil relics “need more protection” PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 09 September 2011 12:41
Vitally important old fossils found at El Médano are to be given extra protection. The sismitas can be found near the Red Mountain and Leocadio Machado beach. These areas are already afforded the maximum protection but Grandadilla council now proposes to strengthen this.
Scientists say similar sismitas can only be found in Costa Rica but there have already been cases where the Médano examples have been disturbed because there are no markers or signs.
Some of them were destroyed in the 1970s when stone was remove to create the south motorway.
The fossils are believed to date back as far as 10,000 years ago and are the relics of a massive earthquake when sand was compressed with water. The result was thousands of tubes and dikes.
