Tenerife will see a massive influx of Russian visitors this year
Government figures show that flight places to the Canary Islands in 2011 have increased by 98%.
During the summer, the airlines will maintain six weekly connections between Russia and Tenerife.
In 2010, the number of Russian tourists visiting Spain as a whole stood at just over 600,000, up 43.4% and this growth is expected to continue in 2011. The increase last year for the Canary Islands was 15% and in the first four months of 2011, this trend has continued.
The crisis in Egypt has played a big part as Egypt used to receive two million Russian tourists each year and there has been a major deflection of flights to the Canary Islands instead. The archipelago feels this is a great opportunity to show Russian visitors what the Canary Islands can offer and tempt them away for the future as well.
Tenerife is currently preparing a major programme of press and travel agent trips from Russia and there is to be a joint marketing campaign with Turespana.
