As Canarios and residents know, the 30th May is an important day in the Tenerife calendar, dating back to 1983 where Canary nationality” was truly recognised.Such things have very little meaning to young children. However, on 27th May the school came alive with Canary traditions!
It´s two years since the infants first celebrated this special day. We have made toys from plants, tasted gofio and danced local dances.
This year was bigger and better.
Parents sent in typical local food for the children to sample, such as gofio cake, potatoes with sauces, tortilla and goat´s cheese! The children loved the different food and flavours and there wasn't a lot left over at the end of the day!
We had a group of young men demonstrating Lucha Canaria and it was great fun watching some of the children as young as Reception class having a go at wrestling these huge, strong men to the ground!
The whole department dressed in traditional costume. Thanks to everyone involved in making the day a Día de Canarias to remember!
