Police investigating alleged local government corruption have made another eight arrests on Lanzarote.

The people involved are said to include a former mayoress and an ex-Town Hall advisor, as well as other politicians and officials who had been involved with tourism. One of the arrests, of a businessman, was made in Madrid.
The eight are facing allegations of bribery and influence peddling centred around granting planning favours
The arrests were made as part of Operation Jade which police say is still ongoing. A number of homes were raided and bank accounts are being investigated.
President of the Government of the Canary Islands Paulino Rivero has reminded people that the eight should be granted the right of presumed innocence under the judicial system which he has every faith in.
