Following the recent outcry over Spanish air traffic controllers' wages, a new system will be brought into force.
From July 29, La Gomera airport will be the first airport in Spain to operate without air traffic controllers, who will be replaced by a team of five AFIS staff who will provide an airport information service.
Binter is the only regular airline which operates into La Gomera, and airport Director, Javier Martín said that the new team were ‘accredited and competent' people, who had received full training.
To start with La Gomera will not be charged for the new service, which will be priced at 300,000 euros a year, giving them a saving of 550,000 euros by not using air traffic controllers.
According to the Secretary of State for Transport, Concepción Gutiérrez, it is expected that prices will fall by 15% over the next two years.
