The Civil Guard has broken up a gang on Gran Canaria dedicated to counterfeiting papers, theft and fraud.
It is believed the effects of their actions will be wide-spread and injured parties have already been found on Lanzarote and on the mainland.
The investigation began last April following complaints that cars had been broken into when parked near beaches and personal documents stolen. These identification papers were later used to buy electronic equipment.
The Civil Guard said three people were arrested, one believed to be the ring-leader, and a further 34 have been questioned. They estimate that the scam has netted at least 30,000 euros worth of goods. One house was searched and items found included a personal computer, laptop, two expensive mobile phones, USB memory sticks, fake passport size photographs and false documents.
At least 24 cases of the false purchase of computers and mobile phone contracts are being investigated and police said this could be much higher as some people might not even be aware that their details have been used.
Investigation of the data on the computers seized also reveal that false documents on educational qualifications might also have been issued. These appear to have been sold to people, mainly to get employment in the military fields.
