Fuerteventura is leading the way in diversification by increasing its yield of extra virgin olive oil six-fold over the last four years. This year’s yield will reach 6,395 litres, says the Cabildo which is helping farmers by distributing thousands of olive trees. It also makes no charge for the grinding of the olives in a mill built three years ago.
Cabildo president Mario Cabrera said the outlook was for further increased production, with 55 farmers having participated in 2011.
The extra virgin olive oil is described as being of exceptional organic quality and carrying a product guarantee.
