The Canary Islands may need to be virtually self-sufficient in producing alternative energy within the next quarter of a century.

 Experts from the Technological Institute of Renewable Energy at Granadilla industrial estate also believe electric cars will need to play their part.
When oil eventually runs out, they say, the Canary Islands with its limitless sun and wind will be in a unique position to capitalise on other natural sources such as wind farms. It will also prove cheaper than conventional measures but still create jobs in the island because of the need for cleaning and maintenance.
Clean energy only accounts for about four or five per cent of provision in the Canary Islands at the moment although a major project on El Hierro would serve the entire population.
The ITER on Tenerife is involved in major projects to provide green energy and green homes.
