A Cafeteria and pub: The Cafeteria/Tasca Sansofé was opened in March, 2011 by Zacarias Acosta. He already has twenty years of café and food distribution under his belt. He is happiest when organising, and the opportunities offered by the Sansofé are limitless. He has three separate platforms to operate on, an open terrace, an interior bar and a large dining room. Zacarias invites locals or passers-by to come and have a quick or family-style breakfast, a cold beer or glass of wine, classic tapas, or try exotic dishes during a romantic dinner accompanied by family and/or friends. The situation (on a much-used main road) is ideal for attracting a wide variety of guests who need rapid service, simple good food and friendliness before carrying on with the day’s work, or simply at the end of it.
In the restaurant one can start with tapas such as the tortilla española, with cold cuts of meat, chicken and spinach croquettes, chopped sirloin of beef with mushrooms, or onion and apple; there are half-metre sausages, goat’s or Manchego cheeses, escaldon de gofio (mixed cereals ground to flour and moistened with chicken and vegetable broth). These can be found on the Main Menu. Or you can be pleasantly surprised by what is not on the Menu - Kangaroo, Ostrich, Pheasant or Sirloin of Venison for example. Rather difficult to find these exotic meats anywhere else . . .
During our visit Zacarias served us Ensalada de la Casa, made of tomatoes, Gherkin, Goat’s cheese, melon, jamón Serrano, plus an exquisite tiny apple in syrup as a sweet-and-sour Starter. Then we had assorted fried delicacies, such as Spinach Croquettes, Shrimps and a Tuna Pastie! As a main course we had Secreto Iberico (specially cured Iberian ham), with home-made small fried potatoes, plus a Sauté of vegetables in their season, a kind of ratatouille. A terrific gourmet among us got a delicious chopped Beef Sirloin in Mushroom Sauce as well, and he could have continued the stuffing with Pork in Seasonal Vegetables and miniature home-made Chips.
A cool, smooth red wine from the Orotava Valley helped fully complement the different tastes and choices offered by the Sansofé. The prices are perfectly reasonable – an average of ten to twelve euros per head.
The Cafetería Pub Sansofé is easily found. It is on the main road (Carretera General) between La Orotava and Santa Úrsula, in Las Cuevas (those five beautiful urbanisations), just outside the ancient city of Orotava, a few steps away from the new bridge they are building (and taking far too long about it) over the barranco.
The Café stands next to the Pharmacy of Carmen Reyes and Tino and Loly’s Supermercado Las Cuevas. There is ample parking outside.
The address is: Urbanización Las Cuevas Las Cuevas, Calle Alemania 1:
Telephone number 922 32 57 40.
The Café is closed on Mondays, after the usual heavy business on Sundays. Zacarias manages another business in the town itself, in the Avenida Sor Soledad Cobían, No. 48: well worth a visit. The telephone number is 922 32 24 96.
