Street theatre may go PDF Print E-mail

In its effort to find ways of reducing council debts, the Nationalist-Conservative Council in Puerto is reported to be considering doing without the annual street theatre festival.

The idea has stunned even their most fervent supporters as, unlike the Gay Week festival introduced recently by the previous Socialist council, the street theatre festival had consolidated itself since the year 2000 as one of the most successful theatrical and artistic initiatives in Tenerife. What's more, it has become a very international affair and the 2009 event, with 60 different theatres performing in the streets, attracted thousands of visitors from all over the island. The Nationalist-Conservative coalition has pointed out that part of the reason for shelving events such as the environmental cinema festival is due to the town's precarious economic situation and to debts left by their Socialist predecessors in power. Nevertheless, some people feel the new government would be unwise to cut out what has clearly become a crowd-pulling event and an asset to the tourism industry.
