Apart from its killer whales, dolphins, sharks and penguins in their special dome to create their natural habitat, the world famous Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz will soon also boast the biggest aviary in the world.

Indeed the 17,000m 3 bird cage is due to open to the public this summer. The thirty metre high sanctuary will become home and flying zone for a hundred different species of bird from Australia and Asia, and they will enjoy exuberant, tropical vegetation to make them feel at home. The public will be able to get close looks at the birds and study their behaviour close up by walking through the giant cage on a series of specially designed hanging bridges and platforms. The structure is held up by a 21 ton stainless steel base with a series of supporting arms and pillars sunk 16 metres into the ground to enable them to hold up the huge enclosing net. Apart from the architectural cage, designed in Germany, the botanic content of the aviary has been designed to contain a complex collection of plants and trees to simulate the birds’ differing habitats.
