A busy New Year’s Eve for 1-1-2 centres

It was a very busy and eventful night for the Canary 1-1-2 emergency control centre, new figures have revealed.

Some 2,800 calls were taken, which represents an increase of 134.7 per cent on a normal Thursday. This figure relates to the period from 9pm on December 31st until 8pm on January 1st.

Father and son both die in drowning tragedy

There was a double New Year tragedy on Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria when a father and son both lost their lives.

The two men were aged 65 and 36 and were of Spanish nationality although living in Switzerland. It is believed both drowned.
