Hiker airlifted after injuring legs

A 20-year-old hiker injured both legs when he fell down an enbankment in Gran Canaria.

The accident happened in the area of the Pico de las Nieves, between the munici-palities of Tejeda and San Mateo in the mid-afternoon.

A spokesman for the 112 emergency centre said the man fell into an area of difficult access. Firefighters of the San Mateo Park Consortium rescued him in collaboration with the members of the Emergency and Rescue Group and moved him on a stretcher to the place where the rescue helicopter had been able to take land.

His leg injuries were described as moderate and he was evacuated to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín.
