La Gomera praised for green efforts as electric vehicles encouraged in Canaries
The Government of the Canary Islands will launch, as of 2019, a new line of aid aimed at promoting the introduction of the electric vehicle in the Canaries with the installation of recharging points.
This was announced by the Minister of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge, Pedro Ortega, during the inauguration, together with the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, of the Encounter on Energy and Sustainable Transport, organised by both institutions in Agulo.
During his speech, Pedro Ortega said: “The Canaries are at a particularly strategic moment in which the traditional energy model is slowly taking a much more sustainable model, based on the need to combat climate change and to better take advantage of the natural resources that exist in the islands and the potential we have to become a reference territory in the development of renewable energies.”
In this context, he said that the island of La Gomera “is a magnificent example of the potential of the Canary Islands not only to become a 100% sustainable territory but also to consolidate as a natural laboratory for the trial and demonstration of pioneering projects in the field of the clean energies.”
He recalled that the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Commerce and Knowledge of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council are working on the develop-ment of the ‘La Gomera 100% Sustainable ‘project, which includes a first diagnosis of the La Gomera energy system with the aim of developing in a second phase a proposal that determines the technical and economic viability of a series of projects related to the impulse of the renewable ones, including the implantation of the electric car on the island, the implantation of microwaves and the habilitation of storage systems energetic
Sr. Curbelo stressed the importance of the island hosting a meeting of this type for the first time, “since it represents an important step towards moving towards a sustainable energy model, which bets on green energy, the self-consumption, energy saving and efficiency measures, among others, and all of this, under the umbrella of the aids and incentives of the competent adminis-trations, something funda-mental to promote these actions. “That’s why I appreciate the interest and collaboration of all the institutions, entities and companies involved in the organisation of this day,” he added.
Sr. Curbelo recalled that with the recent approval of the Insular Plan for Sustainable Mobility, important projects will appear in this area, with the objective of reducing individual transport to the benefit of collective systems, as well as encouraging the use of electric vehicles. In this regard, he announced that the Cabildo is already working on replacing the combustion vehicles be-longing to the insular iInsti-tution for electric vehicles with a heading that reaches 500,000 euros.
Added to this is the creation of the insular network of recharging points for this type of vehicle, which is only awaiting the environmental impact report of the regional Government that confirms the im-plementation of this service.
Pedro Ortega added that, in recent years, the Government of the Canaries has collaborated with the public institutions of La Gomera in the imple-mentation of initiatives that have contributed to reducing energy consumption with energy saving and efficiency measures.
