Tourist plunges 18ft at shopping centre

A 35-year-old man, believed to be a tourist, was seriously injured after falling 18ft from a shopping mall in Gran Canaria.

Medics said he suffered “severe trauma” in the accident in San Bartolomé de Tirajana at 6.38am in the morning.

No further details were given about the circumstances so it is not known if he fell, slipped or jumped. He was described as “foreign”.

Following an emergency call to the 112 control centre, the police and Canary Emergency Service went to the scene. They were told the man had fallen from a height of about six metres.

“The young man had serious injuries and was stabilised and evacuated to the Insular Hospital of Gran Canaria by medical ambulance,” said 112.

Police opened an investigation to determine exactly what happened.
