Marathon bicycle ride along Camino de Santiago
A group of seven volunteers and the president of the Association of Children with Cancer “Pequeño Valiente”, José Jerez recently initiated a bicycle trip through the French route of the Camino de Santiago to travel 600 kilometres from Burgos to Santiago de Compostela.
The objective was to raise awareness about the consequences of childhood cancer in children and adolescents and to publicise the work carried out by the Association in the Canary Islands and elsewhere in Spanish geography.
The ‘Pequeño Camino 2018’ project consisted of cycling five Spanish provinces, from Burgos, Palencia, León and Lugo, to A Coruña, an average of 60 kilometres per day.
During the voyage, members of “Pequeño Valiente”, among them a young man who overcame the disease for years, met with mayors and councillors of some of the towns that they will visit.
They were due to achieve their goal on Thursday, August 30th at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where they received a group of mothers with children who suffer from the disease.
This initiative was supported by RIU Hotels, Fred Olsen, Tirma, Freemotion, Cajamar, La Caixa and Mundo T-Shirts, as well as the contributions of different companies, individuals and groups, such as the students of CEIP San Lorenzo.
