World Cup event brings boost for Puerto
The Spanish and Canarian Basketball Federation and Puerto council have held a new working meeting to continue advancing preparations for the next Female Basketball World Cup to be held in Tenerife and in which the Puerto de la Cruz will be the seat.
Fourteen of the 16 women’s absolute teams participating in the World Cup will stay in hotels in the tourist city and will train in the Miguel Ángel Díaz Molina Pavilion.
At the meeting, the Mayor of Puerto, Lope Afonso, the Vice President of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), José Antonio Montero, councillor for Sports, Javier González and the President of the Canarian Basketball Federation, Manuel Gómez, were present. The meeting also served to sign the collaboration agreement between the council and the Spanish Basketball Federation.
Thanks to the signing of this agreement, the FEB undertakes to assign to the session a limited number of tickets for the matches of the XVIII Women’s Basketball World Cup. In addition, free tickets will be donated to local schools and clubs, as well as the possibility of attending trainings for the different selections. Finally, at the end of the event, all the official balls used in training will be transferred to Puerto’s sports department.
The Mayor, Lope Afonso said it was a great promotion opportunity for Puerto which would be able to show its “unique face”.
Vice President of the Spanish Basketball Federation, José Antonio Montero, stressed the importance of holding an event of this category in Spain, saying: “We want a unique World Cup that demonstrates again the organisational capacity of our country.”
The 2018 Women’s Basketball World Cup will take place between September 20th and 30th at the Quico Cabrera Municipal Sports Palace located in Santa Cruz and the Santiago Martín Sports Pavilion of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
